WHAT CAN GO DOWN THE GARBAGE DISPOSAL?
Garbage disposals are affixed to the primary plumbing system of your home immediately below the kitchen sink. Food scraps and other substances that are flushed down the sink enter the grinding chamber. Items are reduced to small fragments inside this chamber by a shredder, which are subsequently propelled through the drain by an impeller arm and plate.
Only some soft, organic items can be disposed of in garbage disposals. The following things should never be put into the garbage disposal:
Foods that are fibrous, like celery or pumpkin
Waste from starchy foods, such as pasta or potato peels
Espresso grinds
Shells or bones
Eggshells
Frying fats and/or oils
Big seeds or fruit pits
Uncooked rice or oatmeal
Garlic skins
Nuts
Furthermore, you should never dispose of any of the following items in the disposal:
Metal
Paper
Plastic
Trash
It is a good idea to clean your garbage disposal on a regular basis to get rid of any food or waste particles that may have built up inside the mechanism. Maintaining your waste disposal regularly can also help you get rid of any potential mold or bacterial growth. Cleaning your disposal using everyday materials like baking soda or white vinegar is possible in a few different ways.
